The woodcut of a monkey eating fruit on the title page has been interpreted as a pointed reference to Antonio Gardane’s Mottetti del frutto for five voices published in 1538 (which had a woodcut of fruit and contained an address by Gardane: the ’Cale de la Scimia’). Later in 1539 Gardane responded to Buglhat’s insult by presenting on the title page of his Mottetti del frutto for six voices a woodcut of a lion and a bear (the animals of his printer’s mark) attacking a monkey surrounded by half-eaten fruit (see Mary S. ’Mirabile misterium’ is attributed to Jasquet of Mantua by both Harry Lincoln (The Latin Motet: Indexes to Printed Collections, 1500-1600) and George Nugent ("Jacquet of Mantua." Grove Music Online).
’O quam preclara’ is attributed to Jacquet of Mantua by George Nugent ("Jacquet of Mantua." Grove Music Online) and Jacquet de Berchem by Harry Lincoln (The Latin Motet: Indexes to Printed Collections, 1500-1600).
Harry Lincoln suggests that ’Iuo’ is Ivo de Vento, though James Haar ("Vento, Ivo de." Grove Music Online) indicates that de Vento was born too late, c1543 and 1545 and attributes the motets to Ivo Barry ("Ivo Barry." Grove Music Online).
