Best, Aline Mary (1962) A critical edition of the personal poetry of Claude Chappuys.
Full text access: Open
The thesis consists of a critical edition of the personal poetry of Claude Chappuys, one of the minor poets of the court of Francois I. Chappuys' personal poetry consists of his non-political poems, namely his epistles and "poemes", blasons and epigrams. These poems, which were unpublished for the most part in the sixteenth century, are found scattered throughout the manuscripts of the period. The Introduction to the edition consists of a Biography of Chappuys, including a section on his relations with the other court poets of the period, a Literary Study of his personal poetry, and a chapter on the Text comprising sections on the authenticity of attributions, on the arrangement of the edition and on the establishment of the text. There follows a list of Sigla and a Bibliography. The text of Chappuys' personal poetry is then given with full variants and footnotes. After the text there follows a Glossary, an Index of Proper Names and an Index of First Lines.
